This week’s tutorial focuses on the head and how approach drawing it in different directions.
When drawing the head make sure you’ve nailed the correct head shape before adding features. I suggest making your basic head shapes simple & easy to draw consistently. It’s usually best to reduce it to the simplest forms. Every cartoon’s head shape says something about them. Pay attention to what that shape can represent or express about the character. Remember: Think of what you draw as 3 dimensional objects Use cross cutting circles to identify the direction of the face. We all have our favorite angles to draw the head like front view or 3/4 front view. But eventually you will want to master rotating the head and drawing it from different angles. Draw noggins in all directions so that you’ll have no limitations when staging your scenes. A professional cartoonist must be able to draw a character in different positions while making sure it always looks like the same character. Drawing things outside of our comfort zone can be tough but it is always worth the challenge. You will only learn and grow as an artist. Last week I went over how to draw and apply the perfect square. This week’s tutorial goes one step further with the fundamentals of cubic form.
The cube is a square in perspective and is the fundamental building block for any geometric form in perspective drawing. It has 6 equal sides, or planes (unequal sides would render it a rectangle). The plane is the primary component of all cubic forms.
Some tips to remember about planes:
Cube fundamentals
As you become more proficient you will be able to envision a cube before drawing it. Using Comic Draw app to draw cubes & planes
The Comic Draw app has excellent tools that makes drawing planes and cubes simple. I recommend taking advantage of these as much as possible to save time and quickly get your ideas out.
Mastering how to draw the cube has been an invaluable skill that can not be emphasized enough for any aspiring and professional artist. It is my sincere hope that this tutorial has helped make this skill easier to gain and master. Thank you for reading. Please comment & share!
