Budding, aspiring and even established artists struggle with confidence in their skills. Starting with stick figures helps you develop drawing skills. They are fun, simple and a great way to capture action in your characters.
Being good and fast at drawing stick figures is a skill that is well worth the effort and is an indispensable tool in the cartoonist's tool kit. In this video I go over techniques to build strong skeletons and put them to good use. Enjoy!
HOW TO BUILD A SKELETON
1. Draw the Spine to capture general movement. 2. Add ovals for the Head-Torso-Pelvis. 3. Add Lines for Shoulders & attach Arms and Legs. Stick to stick figures until you can stick them anywhere, anyway you want

In November of 2016 the Prime Vice Team had the transformative opportunity to work with The Sid Foundation Organization in New Delhi, India. We conducted a two week project at the Surjit Wasu Memorial School. We taught elementary students about the impact of pollution, lung health, and helped them come up with their own super hero characters through our signature cartooning workshop conducted by Ananya and myself.
Special thanks: The Sid Foundation for providing such a wonderful opportunity that benefitted so many people. For more info on this impactful organization checkout www.thesidfoundation.org. Ananya Vahal for your tireless effort to be a catalyst for change. Follow her on social media @ananyavahal and of course a very special gratitude goes out to the teachers and students of Surjit Washu Memorial School. Your warmth and energy has made a lasting impression. We sincerely hope that we did the same. Peace, Loso
This past weekend the Prime Vice team conducted a live workshop to teach people in our community how to create comics. The class was capped at 15 people however we had an overflow. We were able to accommodate 21 people. We were happy to have such a great and eager turnout which ranged from teenagers to grown adults. The workshop was open to the public so we also broadcasted the workshop live on Facebook so that people from all around the world could tune in.
The workshop was a success. We appreciate the opportunity to be able to work with wonderful people, build community and spread the joy of creating comics. We look forward to doing more of this type of work in the future.
Special thanks to: The Sewell Mill Library & Cultural Center for hosting us at their brand new accommodating facilities. Follow them on social media @sewellmill Ananya Vahal for sharing her writing expertise Follow her @ananyavahal Art is King for the excellent camera work and encouragement! Follow them @artisking_atl Plasq.com for providing the Comic Draw app software we used in this demonstration. In 2016 we started the #PVSKETCH drawing challenge. The intention was to collect drawings from artists and post them on social media to create an online gallery and community with the hashtag pvsketch. It's a collaborative promotion where the artist gets to draw what they want, include their social media handle and personal hashtag on the sketch sheet that features our social media and hashtag as well.
We started this campaign at Prime Vice Studios' first convention appearance which was Heroes Con 2016 in Charlotte, North Carolina. We collected over 40 drawings featuring eager kids' drawings and the amazing talent found in the Artist Alley. We appreciate all the submissions and hope to continue growing this community over time. Please glance through the gallery and find new favorite artists! Peace, Loso PS. The layout and design of the comic page is a crucial stage of the development process. Its the roadmap to outline your story. In comics, the panel arrangement, shape, and positions in relation to each other must be composed in a way that is intuitive and obvious. The Comic Draw app has some cool features that make this step in the creation process fun.
Working small is the fastest way to quickly figure out the layout of your pages. Using templates helps streamline this process. Drawing at this scale helps you decide which compositions work well and you can try out several drafts before committing. The above image is sample template. You can download your free copy of this template to print and practice on.
?
Unless drawing straight from your mind, you will be working from a script. The Comic Draw app has a cool feature that lets you work on your script and art at the same time. The writing and drawing modes are interactive. You can actually move lettering elements from the script onto your comic pages such as titles, sound effects, captions, speech bubbles and even panels that you can use as place holders for your drafts.
As you look over your script think about how to depict the story. Ask yourself, “What is the clearest and most interesting way that I can show what is happening in the story?” You can only depict one action per panel and the reader must be able to understand what's happening in every panel all the way to the end.
When deciding where to place captions and speech bubbles make sure important visual story information is not covered up. Arranging all of these elements is a delicate balancing act. Setting all of the non-negotiable elements of the panel before getting too into the drawing saves a lot of frustration down the road. Trust!
Arrange the panels sequentially and prioritize size according to importance. Manga is read from right to left. In the West we typically read from left to right, top to bottom. Sort your panels to read like a Z on the page. When deciding the size of your panels on a page and how they relate to the others remember:
Big panels are the most important Small panels are least important
After you layout the panels and place the lettering elements within those panels, you have an outline to help flesh out the artwork. Building this blueprint as a foundation for the upcoming drawing helps the workflow go smoothly. You do not want to get too invested in a drawing that you can't use while trying to beat deadline goals.
I hope these tips help you become a better sequential artist. Coupled with the Comic Draw app and this template my productivity has gone up as well and hope it does the same for you. I welcome any and all feedback. Thank you for your time.
